art practice

My art practice is based out of a cozy studio in the quirky, historic Carter Building in downtown Raleigh. In this small reprieve from a screen-filled world, I am able to fully immerse in traditional methods and interface with both the public and other artists. The physical and digital forms of my work influence each other, providing a diverse wealth of visual art experience to pull inspiration from.

artist statement

As a self-taught painter, Jennifer Asciutto explores the intricate interplay between emotion, identity, and the natural world through a diverse array of materials, primarily acrylic paint, but also incorporating chalk, ink, and other mediums. Beginning during the pandemic, Jennifer discovered a profound passion for painting that transcends traditional boundaries. Initially drawn to abstract landscapes, she soon shifted focus to the human figure as a central motif, influenced by personal experiences with anxiety. This period gave rise to a series of works depicting figures in moments of hesitation, half-submerged in water, reflecting the struggle between sinking and swimming—a metaphor for the internal conflicts of emotional suppression.

In Jennifer Asciutto’s distinctive style, characterized by a sometimes whimsical or cartoonish aesthetic, there exists a deliberate contrast with the weighty themes explored. The blank expressions often worn by the paintings’ subjects symbolize the suffocating effect of repressed emotions, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of human vulnerability.

As the artist navigates a path towards healing, recent works have revisited abstract landscapes and themes from nature, signaling a return to roots while embracing the evolution of artistic expression. Rejecting the confines of stylistic uniformity, Jennifer prioritizes authenticity and intuitive artistic exploration, striving to create cohesive series while remaining receptive to the organic evolution of style and subject matter over time.
